Five Important Items
to Consider Regarding Insurance...

1. Anytime you travel outside of your home province, you are at risk of incurring additional medical costs in the event of an emergency. Annual travel medical plans can be purchased to assist you with these costs. An example would be an ambulance charge in Alberta or the cost difference in service between BC and the USA.

2. Home/Condo/Tenants insurance policies have limits for jewellery, watches, cash, certain collections, bicycles, business equipment. It is important to ensure that these limits are adequate in case of a claim.

3. Insurance for recreational and rental properties are not designed to cover short term rentals. If you are renting your property on a short term basis, it is important that your agent is properly informed and the correct coverage is purchased.

4. Good homeowner’s policies have a Guaranteed Replacement Cost clause. In case of a total loss, the policy guarantees the rebuilding of your home regardless of the limit shown on your policy. However, to qualify for this valuable feature, all renovations to your home which has increased the rebuilding cost (for example, additional square footage or renovations costing more than $5,000) must be communicated to your home insurance agent.

5. ICBC requires the owner of the car to state the principal driver of the car. Failure to correctly identify this person could result in a breach of the contract and coverage being denied. As well, you must state the correct use of the vehicle. There is a small discount if all members of your household have 10 or more years of driving experience.
